BWF World Championships 2023 Semifinals Highlights
Three-time world champion, Spanish ace Marin showed she was back to her best in defeating the Japanese star in Copenhagen to reach her first world final since 2018.
This year, WS’s gold medal will be a generational battle for the ages. Carolina Marin, three-time world champion and Olympic gold medallist, faces a player nine years younger, someone who has nearly swept all before her this season. An Se Young is, astonishingly, in her 11th final from 12 tournaments.
Marin shed tears of joy after crashing out two-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi, who pulled an A-game in the semi.
Yamaguchi did everything but win the opening game. Played at a crackling high pace, exploring all angles and spaces, the world No.2 was 18-14 up, but Marin wouldn’t yield. The iron will didn’t bend, and once the game was taken, all belief drained from Yamaguchi. Marin bustled through, one step closer to the prize she’d set her eyes on.
The rise of the young talents
This year, the audiences in Denmark witness the rise of the youth, as Kunlavut Vitidsaran and Kodai Naroka have come so far in their journey, all the way to the finals.
Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsaran ousted India’s HS Prannoy to advance to his first world championship final, while Japan’s Naraoka cruised past home ace Anders Antonsen in straight games.
They were in the BWF World Junior Championships final five years ago, and now, Vitidsarn and Naraoka will contest the TotalEnergies BWF World Championships 2023 final; a fresh champion will emerge.
A new reign is coming, and it is exhilarating to watch.
First for many
Seo Seung Jae, who has been Chae Yu Jung (XD) and Kang Min Hyuk (MD) ‘s double so far, will attempt to become the first male player since countryman Kim Dong Moon to win a double title at the World Championships. It’s astonishing to know that 20 years past since Kim achieved such a record.
Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti are one win away from becoming the first Indonesian women’s doubles champions. Only two other Indonesian women’s doubles pairs have made it this far – Verawaty Fadjirin/Imelda Wiguno (1980) and Finarsih/Lili Tampi (1995).
Host’s only hope
Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen are Denmark’s first BWF World Championships men’s doubles finalists in 10 years.
In 2013, Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen won silver. The home fans are only one win away from celebrating their first gold, and it’s worth the wait.
