PV SINDHU ADVANCES AS YVONNE LI RETIRES
The two-time Olympic medallist took a 21-10 lead before her German opponent, Yvonne Li, decided to retire.
Sindhu pulled away from a 4-all tie to take an 11-7 lead.
The 28-year-old Hyderabad native then unleashed 11 game points en route to a smooth opening set win.
The win sets up Sindu for an early second-round matchup against top-seeded Korean An Se Young.
Se Young holds an imposing 6-0 lead in her head-to-head matchup against Sindhu.
PRANNOY, KIDAMBI SRIKANTH FAIL TO ADVANCE
HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth, however, failed to match Sindhu’s feat after losing their opening-round matches.
Prannoy went down 21-14, 13-21, 13-21, to Su Li Yang of Chinese Taipei to exit the opening round for a second straight time.
The world No.8 also was eliminated early at the French Open Super 750 tournament last week.
Srikanth was no match against world No.1 Viktor Axelsen, who cruised to a 21-9, 21-9 victory.
Only Lakshya Sen remains to represent India in men’s singles competition. Sen will face Magnus Johannsen of Denmark in another opening round action on Wednesday.
