CHRISTIE OUTLASTS GINTING IN ALL-INDONESIAN MEN’S FINAL
In the final, Christie gave Indonesia its first men’s singles title in 30 years after defeating compatriot Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, 21-15, 21-14.
The world No.9 scored six straight points to break loose from a tight 15-14 edge in the second set to win it all.
Christie now becomes the first Indonesian to hoist the men’s singles title since Hariyanto Arbi in 1994.
It was a tough setback a rewarding road for Christie, who ousted India’s Lakshya Sen, 21-12, 21-15, in the semifinals.
Sen earlier eliminated Malaysia’s top men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia in the last eight, 20-22, 21-16, 21-19.
MARIN RAISES WOMEN’S TITLE AS YAMAGUCHI RETIRES
It was a different story for Marin, who led 26-24,10-1 when Akane Yamaguchi of Japan retired due to an injury.
The Spanish shuttler won the women’s singles title in Birmingham for the first time since 2015.
“It was a tough week and I feel really, really proud because, at the beginning of the week, I had a conversation with my coach about the things that I have to improve,” Marin said.
Yamaguchi eliminated world No.1 An Se Young of Korea, 21-10 19-21 21-14, in the semifinal.
Se Young earlier defeated India’s top women’s singles shuttler, PV Sindhu, in the second round.
