Thomas Cup 2022: India, Chinese Taipei sweep Group C opponents

India and Chinese Taipei both had auspicious starts at the BWF Thomas Cup Finals 2022, shutting out their respective opponents on May 8 at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.

India blanks Germany

Lakshya Sen upended Max Weißkirchen, 21-16, 21-13, to start off India’s romp. The first doubles of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, as well as second singles competitor Srikanth Kidambi, encountered some resistance, and needed three games to finish off their opponents.

After building that insurmountable 3-0 lead, the south Asian team had an easier time in the succeeding matches. Arjun MR and Dhruv Kapila blasted the pair of Bjarne Geiss and Jan Colin Völker in straight games, and HS Prannoy breezed past Matthias Kicklitz in 30 minutes, 21-9, 21-9.

Chinese Taipei holds off Canada

Chinese Taipei conceded a single game en route to stomping Canada. The two doubles matches went less than 30 minutes, while the first two singles bouts barely went above the half-hour mark.

It was Lu Chia-hung who encountered some trouble as the Taiwanese needed three games in 50 minutes to defeat BR Sankeerth.

Group C resumes action on May at 2pm, with the victors going for their second win.
