Uber Cup Day 2: Quarterfinal cast take shape
The cast for the knockout stage of the BWF Uber Cup Finals 2022 is now taking shape after another day of action last May 9 at Bangkok’s Impact Arena.
With the race to the trophy heating up, the said groups already had their representatives, in which the seeding will be determined by their final group assignments on May 10.
Group C: Hosts go through alongside Denmark
It was Group C that produced the first two teams that will be assured of a spot in the quarterfinal, with host nation Thailand booking their seats by eliminating Malaysia, 4-1 in the afternoon session at Court 1.
Both sides split their first two singles rubbers which were both won in three games before the Thais clinched the tie by winning the last three matches.
On the other hand, Denmark also progressed to the next round with a 5-0 whitewash of Egypt, as it never dropped a game all session long.
Group B: China, Chinese Taipei inch closer to quarters
In Group B, it was the usual suspects in China and Chinese Taipei all but assured of their quarterfinal spots with separate whitewashes over Spain and Australia respectively in their evening session.
The defending Uber Cup champions rarely broke a sweat in their mastery of a Spanish side still without Carolina Marin, in which they won all five rubbers in straight games in Court 3. The closest a match came to a third game was in the opener between Chen Yu Fei and Clara Azurmendi, with the match lasting 43 minutes before the reigning Olympic champion won 21-16, 23-21.
Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei also made quick work on Australia in record time. The proof is on its opening singles, where world number 2 Tai Tzu-ying outclassed Taichung-born Aussie shuttler Chen Hsuan-yu 21-6, 21-5 in just 24 minutes..
