Jonatan Christie’s Achievements in Badminton
The 24-year-old has been one of the country’s best shuttlers, in which he won the men’s singles gold in the 2018 Asian Games that were held in his hometown of Jakarta, outlasting Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien-Chen in a three-game marathon.
Christie may have won only five career men’s singles titles in his career, but his first one made headlines when he won the Indonesian International in 2013 as a fifteen-year-old, when he swept the more-experienced Alamsyah Yunus in the title match.
Jonatan Christie’s debut in Thomas Cup
Solid in team play, he made his mark the Thomas Cup where he played in three editions.
He went 3-1 in his debut in 2016, as Indonesia finished as bridesmaids to Denmark in Kunshan. Two years later in Bangkok, he fell to 1-2 with his team bagging the bronze.
But in Aarhus, Christie became the man for Indonesia as it ended their 19-year wait for the Thomas Cup. After going 2-1 in the group stage, he went undefeated in his knockout stage rubbers that went the distance and clinched their 14th crown in the final when he outlasted China’s Li Shi Feng.
