BWF Thomas Cup Finals 2022 draw: Hosts, holders in group of death
The fate of 16 nations was known when the draw for the group stage of the BWF Thomas Cup Finals 2022 was made on April 1 in Bangkok. The 32nd staging of the tournament will take place on May 8-15 in Nothanburi’s IMPACT Arena.
What to expect in Thomas Cup Finals 2022?
Host nation Thailand and holders Indonesia are drawn together alongside Singapore and South Korea on Group A, considered as the group of death owing to the quality of the players expected to take part.
The 14-time champions have world number 5 Anthony Sinisuka Ginting to lead the line, while the hosts are leaning on former three-time World Juniors champion Kunlavut Vitisdarn and mixed doubles specialist Dechapol Puavaranukroh.
On just their third appearance, Singapore has reigning world champion Loh Kean Yew on their fold. South Korea has the duo of Ko Sung-Hyun and Shin Baek-Cheol expected to take part.
Meanwhile, Denmark and China were paired together on Group B alongside France and Algeria. 2020 Summer Olympics men’s singles finalists Viktor Axelsen and Chen Long are slated to be fielded by their respective countries.
Group C will have Chinese Taipei and India being the favorites to progress. Rounding up are Germany and Canada.
Lastly, men’s singles world number two Momota Kento and Japan are looking forward to face world number seven Lee Zii Jia and Malaysia, with England and New Zealand wrapping up Group D.
