Indonesians dominate Singapore Open
Indonesia exhibited a show of force at the 2022 Singapore Open, winning titles in three events that included a 1-2 finish in men’s doubles.
Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin defeated fourth seeds Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto in an all-Indonesian men’s doubles final, 9-21, 21-14, 21-16. Prior to their gold medal performance in the recent Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam, the pair of 20-year-olds last stood on top of the podium together at the 2019 Malaysia International.
Over in women’s doubles, Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti repeated on Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu of China, 21-14, 21-17. This duplicated their outcome at the Malaysia Open in June.
Meanwhile, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting bagged his first BWF World Tour championship this season after upending 21-year-old Naraoka Kōdai of Japan in the battle for first place, 23-21, 21-17. This also ended Indonesia’s top-ranked men’s singles player’s tour drought that dates back to the 2020 Indonesia Masters.
In mixed doubles, Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand finally got over the hump and won their second BWF World Tour crown in 2022. They beat Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping of China in the winner-take-all encounter, 21-12, 21-17, to defend their spot as reigning champs.
Finally, in women’s singles, PV Sindhu of India also grabbed her second tour trophy this year. She overcame Wang Zhiyi of China in three games, 21-9, 11-21, 21-15.
The 2022 Taipei Open is currently ongoing with the TotalEnergies BWF World Championships 2022 to follow in August.
