Ng Tsz Yau achieves double win at Taipei Open

Ng Tsz Yau of Hong Kong achieved a rare feat by winning two events in the same tournament staging.

The 24-year-old and partner Lee Chun Hei trampled Ruttanapak Oupthong and Chasinee Korepap of Thailand, 21-8 21-9, to capture the 2022 Taipei Open mixed doubles crown. Ng then had a quick turnaround, and with Tsang Hiu Yan, defeated Hirokami Rui and Kato Yuna of Japan, 21-15, 18-21, 21-19, to snag the women’s doubles title.

The last time a single shuttler won more than one championship in a single Taipei Open was in 2005 when the mixed nationality duo of Indonesian Tony Gunawan (representing the United States) and Cheng Wen-Hsing of Chinese Taipei came out on top on mixed doubles then proceeded to win their respective same-sex doubles finals.

Gunawan and fellow Indonesian-born American Halim Haryanto clinched the men’s doubles first-place trophy. Cheng, meanwhile, joined forces with compatriot Chien Yu-chin to bring home the women’s doubles top prize.

Finally, the host country had players in the final of the three other events, two of them emerging victorious. Tai Tzu-Ying and Chou Tien-Chen proved why they are the highest-ranked Taiwanese shuttlers in their respective divisions.

Tai dealt with seventh seed Kawakami Saena of Japan, 21-17, 21-16, for her third BWF World Tour conquest this season. Chou, on the other hand, beat Naraoka Kōdai of Japan, 14-21, 21-10, 21-6, in the men’s singles to claim his second consecutive and fourth overall Taipei Open.

Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin were not as fortunate as they lost to Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun of Malaysia in the men’s doubles final, 18-21, 21-11, 18-21.
