Axelsen, Chinese pairs grab third BWF season win
Men’s singles world number one Viktor Axelsen and two Chinese doubles teams head to the 2022 Indonesia Open with momentum on their side by winning the 2022 Indonesia Masters.
Axelsen made short work of third seed Chou Tien-chen in the final, 21-10, 21-12, to garner his third 2022 BWF season title. This adds to his wins at 2022 All England Open and the 2022 European Badminton Championships earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan topped the women’s doubles, while Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong did the same in mixed doubles. Both partnerships have three season championships each.
Chen and Jia defeated Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Ramadhanti, 21-18, 21-12, in the championship round. This is their fourth finals this season, three of which they were victorious. They took the German Open in March and the Badminton Asia Championships in April.
Their only final round loss was at the BWF Uber Cup 2022 Finals.
Zheng and Huang beat the French duo of Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue, 21-13, 21-14. Their two other wins come from the Badminton Asia Championships and the Thailand Open.
Other winners in this edition of the Indonesia Masters are Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto in men’s singles as well as Chen Yufei in women’s singles.
Alfian and Ardianto won against qualifiers Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang, 21-10, 21-17. The latter completed a shock upset of top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in the semis, 21-17, 21-10.
This is their second first place finish this year after reaching the summit of the 2022 Swiss Open in March.
Chen overcame Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in three games, 21-16, 18-21, 21-15, for her first crown in 2022.
The Super 1000-level Indonesia Open will be played on June 14-19 at the Istana Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta.
