Lee Zii Jia beat Christine
Badminton fans were excited to watch the duo battle in Copenhagen – the elite BWF World Championships venue this year.
The result, however, was less tight than the expectations were since Malaysia’s star got off brilliantly against fifth seed Christie of Indonesia 21-13, 21-15.
The Malaysia star shuttler needed 39 minutes to move into round two at the worlds for the fourth consecutive time, despite admitting a lack of confidence ahead of the tournament. It went to the tournament with relatively low expectations.
Next up for the unseeded shuttler will be Canada’s Brian Yang, who ousted Kai Schaefer of Germany. On paper, Brian is a far more comfortable opponent for Lee than Christine.
His compatriot Ng Tze Yong also advanced after ousting China’s Zhano Jun Peng 21-19, 26-24.
Defending champion Viktor Axelsen, Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, seeded third and sixth seed Li Shi Feng also made it through.
World number two Anthony Ginting withdrew from the World Championships a few days before the start due to the death of his mother, who passed away on 9 August.
Loh Kean Yew cruises into the second round
2021 badminton world champion Loh Kean Yew has stormed into the second round, beating Pablo Abian from Spain 21-12, 21-9.
The star shuttler from Singapore, seeded seventh, needed only 28 minutes to defeat 38-year-old Abian in the second consecutive year that the pair faced each other in the opening rounds at the World Championships.
Loh Kean Yew will face Azerbaijan’s Indonesian-born shuttler Ade Resky Dwicanto, who beat Justin Ma of the United States 21-14, 21-17 in round two.
