Player Profile: Chen Long (CHN)
China’s Chen Long endured a long road to become one of the world’s best before coming out of the shadows of his compatriot Lin Dan, who is arguably badminton’s GOAT.
A former world number one, he has his world ranking of six protected despite not playing since last year, where he was dethroned as the Olympic champion by Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen in Tokyo.
Like Lin, Chen won a pair of world championships (2014, 2015) and an Olympic gold in Rio 2016, all of which came at the expense of Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei. On the BWF circuit (Super Series, Grand Prix, World Tour, he ranked third in career men’s singles titles won with 27, with only Lee and Lin having won more tournaments than him.
His individual exploits got him the nod to represent China in team play, where he was stellar when called upon. He won a total of three Thomas Cups (2010, 2012, 2018), and had a career record of 18-3 in his five appearances.
