CHINA EYES THOMAS CUP TITLE AMID TOUGH FIELD

China is determined to regain the Thomas Cup title after being ousted in the quarterfinals the last time in Bangkok.

In the previous edition, China settled as runner-up in the Thomas Cup group stage after losing to Denmark, 2-3.

The badminton giants still advanced to the next round, only to lose to Indonesia in the quarterfinals, 0-3.

At the time, China only had Lu Guang Zu, then world No.25, as well as Ji Ting and Tan Quiang, as singles and doubles bets, respectively.

CBA HEAD LIKES CHINA’S THOMAS CUP CHANCES

China Badminton Association (CBA) president Zhang Jun likes China’s chances in the Thomas Cup in Chengdu with a complete lineup.

World No.2 Shi Yu Qi will lead China’s charge in men’s singles after serving a 10-month internal ban from the CBA.

Li Shi Feng, Guang Zu, and Weng Hong Yang also made it to the lineup.

Li Jun Hui retired at 26 at the end of 2021 after winning silver with Liu Yu Chen at the Tokyo Olympics.

“The retirement of Li Jun Hui resulted in temporary combinations in our men’s doubles lineup,” Zhang said.

CHINA BRACES FOR MULTIPLE CHALLENGERS INDIA, INDONESIA

Zhang cited India and Indonesia as some of the multiple challenges China needs to conquer this year.

“While our overall strength has seen improvement, so too have India, Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea,” he told Badminton Magazine China.

“Our primary focus lies in how adeptly we navigate past each opponents,” the CBA head added.

Zhang called for a “strategic approach to every match from the group stage onward” to regain the Thomas Cup title.
