POPOV TOPS GEMKE FOR FIRST BWF SINGLES TITLE
Christo Popov got back at previous tormentor Rasmus Gamke to pull off a 21-17, 21-16 victory in the men’s singles final. The Frenchman’s convincing win over the Danish shuttler was a perfect birthday gift, as Popov turns 22 on Friday.
The No.8 seed avenged his 2024 European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships final loss to Gamke this time. At that tournament, Gamke won, 14-21, 22-20, 21-9.
The win between two European shuttlers marked Popov’s first-ever men’s singles title in a BWF World Tournament.
BLICHFELDT STOPS NGUYEN TO CLAIM WOMEN’S CROWN
Mia Blichfeldt succeeded where Gamke failed, as the Danish hotshot defeated Nguyen Thuy Linh of Vietnam, 21-11, 21-9, for the women’s singles title.
The Dane set the tone early, taking an 8-3 lead, and was still ahead 11-7 at the break before taking the opening set. Blichfeldt never allowed Nguyen to recover, as she broke a 2-all tile to take a 12-2 advantage in the second set en route to the title.
It was Blichfeldt’s first women’s singles title in the World Tour since topping the 2019 Spain Masters.
