India tops Thailand to win BATC 2024 women’s title
PV Sindhu completed her successful comeback from a knee injury after she helped India win another title.
Sindhu scored before her teammates took her lead, sending India to a 3-2 win over Thailand on Sunday. That win propelled India to the Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) 2024 women’s title in Selangor, Malaysia, for the first time.

Sindhu dominated world No.17 Supanida Katethong, 21-12 21-12, in a match that lasted in just 39 minutes. Doubles pair Treessa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand pulled off a 21-16 18-21 21-16 victory over Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Ravindra Prajongja for a 2-0 India lead.
Thailand finally got on the board after Busanan Ongbamrungphan beat Ashmita Chaliha, 21-14 21-14. Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard helped the Thais level with a 21-11 21-9 decision over Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra.
Anmol Kharb did not disappoint Indian fans in the final match. The 17-year-old shuttler upset world No.45 Pornpicha Choeikeewong, 21-14 21-9, to complete India’s historic BATC 2024 title quest.
It was a rewarding final journey for India when the smoke of battle cleared. Sindhu and company had to go through a 3-2 victory over Japan in the semifinal on Saturday to get to this point.
“We beat some really top teams. Not many teams in the world can talk about beating China, Japan, and Thailand, and I think each played well,” India’s chief national coach Pullela Gopichand said. “It has been a total team performance, a superb win for the team.”
