TZE YONG SHOWING PROGRESS, SAYS BAM OFFICIAL

Tze Yong has shown progress from his back and spinal injuries, according to Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) coaching director Rexy Mainaky.

The world No.18 last played at the Malaysia Open in January and at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in February, Mainaky said.

Tze Yong’s possible comeback will boost Malaysia’s chances in the Thomas Cup set from April 27 to May 5.

“Tze Yong is moving better on court, although he is still cautious and isn’t doing anything to risk aggravating his injury,” the BAM official said.

TZE YONG RETURN CRUCIAL IF ZII JIA SKIPS THOMAS CUP

BAM will rely on Tze Yong’s return if Lee Zii Jia might skip the Thomas Cup to focus on the Paris Olympics.

Zii Jia sat out the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games to focus on the World Championships.

However, Tze Yong stepped up, as he helped Malaysia reclaim the mixed-team title.

He also won a silver in the individual category.

Rexy said Tze Yong “has a chance to make the Thomas Cup squad.”

The BAM official added that the tournament is “still about a month to go.”

Malaysia is bunched with European champions Denmark, Hong Kong, and Algeria in Group D in the Thomas Cup.
