Player Profile: Carolina Marin (ESP)
Ranked sixth by the BWF, Carolina Marin’s stellar play in the past decade put Spain on the map of world badminton.
Carolina Marin, Overview & Updates
The lefty from Huelva is slowly regaining her form since she recovered from a pair of ACL injuries in both knees in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
There is no doubt that the former flamenco dancer has a CV that puts her in contention for being the greatest women’s singles player of all time.
Achievements of the Spanish Rio Olympic Badminton Champion
She holds the record title hauls in both the World Championships (thrice) and the European Championships (five), the latter of which she currently holds including the 2018 triumph when it was held in her hometown.
Also, Marin also won Olympic gold in 2016 by outlasting India’s PV Sindhu in a marathon finale in Rio.
Those achievements helped got her at the top of the rankings, which she was the first European since Denmark’s Tine Baum to reach number one.
She hopes that her individual exploits translate to team play when she is expected to headline for Spain at the 2022 Uber Cup in Bangkok, six years after making her tournament debut in Kunshan. She won two of her three rubbers, but her team ended up winless in the Group Stage.
