Player profile: LEE Zii Jia (MAS)
World number seven Lee Zii Jia has been touted as the new alpha of Malaysian badminton and has taken the role well following the retirement of the legendary Lee Chong Wei.
A former two-time World Juniors medalist, the native of Kedah had to inch his way into the elite group the hard way.
The titles came far and few in between for him in the circuit since his first title in Poland in 2017, where he endured a fruitless three-year stretch following his 2018 Chinese Taipei Open triumph. That all changed in 2021 when he outlasted then-number two Viktor Axelsen to claim the prestigious All-England Open.
Like his singles career, Lee had his own share of a dry spell in his two previous Thomas Cup stints where he only went as far as the quarterfinal on both occasions (and with a 4-3 career record). But this time, he will be motivated to lead Malaysia once again after leading them into the Asian team title in their Selangor homestand earlier in February.
