SINDHU RALLIED FROM A SET DOWN TO WIN
The two-time Olympic medallist shrugged off a slow start to outwit world No. 10 Zhang and secure herself a last-eight slot on Thursday. Sindhu will next face either Olympic champion and No.2 seed Chen Yu Fei of China or Denmark’s Line Christophersen for a place in the semifinal.
Zhang took a 4-2 lead in the decider but Sindhu responded to take an 8-5 lead. The Indian women’s shuttler held sway at 11-7 and 17-13 before securing the win.
Indian men’s singles shuttler Kidambi Srikanth, however, was not lucky. Srikanth absorbed a 21-19, 12-21, 20-22 loss to Chinese world No.17 Guang Zu in a round-of-16 match.
MALAYSIAN MEN’S DOUBLES PAIR REACH QUARTERS
Aaron Chia and So Wooi Yik grabbed a place in the quarterfinals with a 21-16 21-18 victory over twins Lee Fang Chih and Lee Fang Jen.
“We did quite well in terms of gameplay execution but we did lose focus midway through the second game,” Aaron said. “There’s a lot to improve for the following match.”
The Malaysian pair guns for the semifinals when they take on world No.2 Min Hyuk and Seung Jae of South Korea. The South Koreans lead their head-to-head matchup, 2-1.
