Sudirman Cup 2023: Group B preview
Indonesia is a force in this sport, but the fact that they have won the tournament only once is hard to justify.
It was way back in 1989 during the inaugural edition of the tournament that saw the country produced The Minions and The Daddies was crowned the title.
They have been in five finals with the last was in 2007, and since then, they have never been finalists for the past seven editions.
Gregoria Mariska Tunjung is the country sole hope as she has just won the Madrid Spain Masters, having beaten Carolina Marin and Pusarla V Sindhu on her way to silveware.
The 23-year-old star give Indonesia hope this time in Suzhou, China.
Meanwhile, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Jonatan Christie are the country’s firepower for years and are confident of reaching at least the last four.
It’s not that strong for their’s women’s doubles pair of Apriyani Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti as the two are in search for their best form.
Thailand are a team to beat, provided that they are at their peak.
Kunlavut Vitidsarn, who upset current World Rank Number One Viktor Axelsen in the India Open earlier this year, is the country’s ace this year.
Pornpawee Chochuwong, winner of the Swiss Open, is there to prove his worth at the Women’s singles, while veteran Ratchanok Intanon out of form.
Thailand can also rely on Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai or Benyapa Aimsaard/Nuntakarn Aimsaard per Women’s doubles.
Dechapol Puavaranukroh/Sapsiree Taerattanachai are also top choice as the pair were 2021 World Champions.
Germany and Canada are in considerable tough group, sitting with Indonesia and Thailand – the badminton’s firepowers.
Mark Lamsfuss will pull his best as the nation depends on him, while Yvonne Li is the name to watch of Women’s singles.
Michelle Yi and Brian Yang are the names that Canada are expecting to go far this time.
Indonesia and Thailand are contenders to qualify for latter stages, but it’s too naive to think that Germany and Canada will let this happen easirly.
