Thomas and Uber Cup 2021 Recap
Indonesia and China deposed the reigning champions in their respective finals to extend their record wins at the 2020 Thomas and Uber Cup, held in October 2021 in Aarhus, Denmark.
Indonesia won all its matchups to claim its first world men’s team title since 2002.
The Indonesian shuttlers whitewashed Algeria, then scraped past Chinese Taipei and Thailand in identical 3-2 score lines to top Group A. They then swept Malaysia in the quarterfinals, broke Danish hearts 3-1 in the semis, and dethroned China in the final to clinch the Thomas Cup for a record-extending 14th time.
Meanwhile, China dropped just a single match for the entire tournament to claim its 15th Uber Cup.
The Asian juggernaut swept its way into Group D, blanking Denmark, Malaysia, and Canada. They then shut out Chinese Taipei in the quarters and walloped Thailand the same way in the semis.
Chen Yufei’s loss to Yamaguchi Akane in the final was the only blemish in the Chinese squad’s campaign, as her teammates finished their respective assignments to regain the crown that they lost in 2018.
Holders Indonesia and China should expect tough competition against other top national teams at the 2022 Thomas and Uber Cup in May.
Singapore will be led by the reigning world champion in men’s singles, while Denmark is slated to field the highest ranked and third-best male players in the world. Chinese Taipei should not be counted out, having the top female shuttler at the helm.
Host Thailand can put up a fight in front of their supportive crowd.
