This year, the biennial international badminton championship, sponsored by M88 Mansion, will be contested by the men’s and women’s national teams of the member associations of the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
The coming tournament is expected to be tough for Indian men’s and women’s team since they have been drawn in the same group with the most successful teams in Thomas and Uber Cup history – Indonesia and China – respectively.
India won its maiden Thomas Cup title in Bangkok in the latest version of the competition.
The Thomas and Uber Cup 2024 draws were held on Friday in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China.
Tough draw for India
The Indian men’s badminton team, who will go into Thomas Cup 2024 as the defending champions, have been placed in Group C along with Indonesia – the most successful nation in the tournament’s history.
India famously defeated Indonesia 3-0 at the 2022 Thomas Cup final in Bangkok, Thailand to win the prestigious competition for the first time. Indonesia have won 14 titles and were last victorious in 2020.
Thailand and England are joining the two in an already precarious Group C.
Ten-time winners and hosts China are in Group A, along with two-time runners-up the Republic of Korea, Canada, and Australia. Japan has won the Thomas Cup once—in 2014—and will be taking on Chinese Taipei, Germany, and Czechia in Group B.
Seeded second, European heavyweights Denmark are in Group D along with five-time champions Malaysia, Hong Kong, China, and Algeria.
The Indian women’s badminton team, meanwhile, has been drawn in Group A in the 2024 Uber Cup alongside top seeds and record 15-time winners China, Canada, and Singapore. India reached the semi-finals of the Uber Cup thrice: in 1957, 2014, and 2016.
2018’s runners-up, Thailand, have been drawn in Group B along with Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and Argentina.
Six-time champions Japan and three-time winners Indonesia are in Group C alongside Hong Kong, China, and debutants Uganda. Defending champions South Korea are joining Denmark, the USA, and Mexico in Group D.
While the Thomas Cup is the world badminton team championship for men, the Uber Cup is the women’s version. This year’s editions will be from April 28 to May 5 in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China.
The women’s team, led by two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, qualified for the 2024 Uber Cup after winning a historic gold medal at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia earlier this year.
The 16 teams competing in each tournament are divided into four groups of four teams each. Teams in each group will play each other in ties consisting of five matches—three singles and two doubles—each. The top two from each team make the quarter-finals.
