Thomas Cup 2022: Denmark secures comeback win in another all-nighter
For the second straight evening (or early morning), the Denmark men’s badminton team was the last one that left Impact Arena. This is because they had to climb back from a 1-2 deficit to oust South Korea from the BWF Thomas Cup Finals 2022.
Denmark averted elimination when Anders Skaarup Rasmussen and Frederik Søgaard scored twice from match point to tie the game and eventually take it, 23-21. They then won the rubber after an hour and 24 minutes to force a win-or-go-home situation.
Rasmus Gemke then completed the comeback victory with a 21-15, 21-19 win over Lee Yun-gyu.
The Danes will face India, which silenced Malaysia in a nail-biter, 3-2. The other semi-finals match pits Indonesia against Japan.
Indonesia was the only one that managed to sweep its quarter-final matchup, sending off China in three matches.
Anthony Sinisuka Ginting beat Zhao Junpeng in the first singles, 21-12, 25-27, 21-17. Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Mohammad Ahsan followed it up with a 21-17 21-16 conquest of Liu Yuchen and Ou Xuanyi.
Finally, Jonatan Christie closed it out against Li Shifeng with a 21-13, 21-18 tally.
Japan, meanwhile, won in similar fashion as Denmark, but was not as tense. The final doubles and last singles took only two games to conclude.
